The Lafayette House may have been the first hotel of this kind in the area, but the Profile House seems to be the one that is the most well-known. In nearby Franconia Notch State Park, hike the unreal slot canyon of Flume Gorge, goggle at waterfalls (not least 80-foot Cloudland Falls on the Falling Waters Tail, and trek to Lonesome Lake on the Basin-Cascade Trail.
